California Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a California law that requires businesses to inform consumers when their products or operations may expose them to chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
The law is designed to help Californians make informed decisions about their exposure to harmful chemicals in everyday products such as food, beverages, consumer goods, and building materials.
Companies that do not comply with Prop 65 risk legal action and significant penalties. As a result, businesses must assess their products and, when necessary, provide clear and reasonable warnings if listed chemicals are present.
